Modern Warfare 4 on PC

Quick Answer

Modern Warfare 4 on PC supports Steam, Battle.net, and Xbox on PC. Check TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, SSD requirements, graphics features, and benchmark setup.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 launches on PC on October 23, 2026, through Steam, Battle.net, and Xbox on PC. Beenox is the PC development partner working with Infinity Ward. The PC version requires TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, an SSD, and a compatible Windows system; meeting only a graphics-card requirement is not enough to establish compatibility.

Choose your storefront before purchasing, check the security requirements before installation, and use the built-in benchmark before committing to demanding graphics settings. The recommended specification targets 90 FPS in Multiplayer at High settings, which is a stated configuration target rather than a measured result for every PC.

Choose a PC storefront

Steam, Battle.net, and Xbox on PC are all confirmed distribution routes for the 2026 game. They share the announced PC launch date, but they are separate ownership and installation paths. A purchase through one launcher should not automatically be treated as a license in the other two.

StorefrontInstallation routeOwnership consideration
SteamSteam Library, then the Call of Duty entryUse the Steam account that owns the purchase
Battle.netAll Games, then Modern Warfare 4Install through the purchasing Battle.net account
Xbox on PCXbox app, then My LibraryXbox Play Anywhere applies to the qualifying Xbox purchase route

Xbox Play Anywhere grants access on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC when the game is purchased through the applicable Xbox store route. That does not make a Steam or Battle.net purchase an Xbox Play Anywhere purchase. If you want to switch between an Xbox console and a Windows PC, resolve that license distinction before spending money.

Modern Warfare 4 requires a separate purchase at launch. Game Pass inclusion is planned for Holiday 2027; an active PC Game Pass membership by itself is not a launch license. Do not infer this game's subscription availability from earlier Call of Duty releases.

Check compatibility before downloading

The minimum specification is the lowest listed hardware tier for playing. The recommended tier is tied to 90 FPS Multiplayer on High graphics. A separate ray-tracing tier targets high-quality ray tracing at an upscaled 4K output. These are different targets, so a system that meets the minimum tier should not be expected to deliver the ray-tracing presentation.

The launch requirements also specify broadband internet and DirectX 12 compatibility. Intel Arc cards require Resizable Bar. Only supported Intel and AMD processors with AVX are listed. Additional storage may be needed for mandatory updates, so 115 GB should be treated as the launch requirement rather than a permanent maximum installation footprint.

TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot are mandatory security requirements. Confirm that your PC supports them and that they are enabled through the appropriate system configuration before launch. A capable GPU does not bypass a missing security prerequisite, and buying a different PC storefront edition does not remove the requirement.

Understand the graphics options

The PC version advertises more than 800 customization options across graphics, gameplay, input, interface, and other areas. It automatically configures settings for detected hardware, giving you a starting point rather than requiring every setting to be chosen from scratch.

Display support includes 1080p, 1440p, 4K, and ultrawide formats. Enhanced FOV is a PC-specific option that expands the view toward the edges of the monitor while preserving the center field of view. It is designed for players who want more peripheral awareness without simply increasing the central FOV in the conventional way.

Compare foreground weapon blur and target clarity when adjusting the separate depth-of-field controls.

For image clarity, the settings include a sharpness slider that works across upscalers, shading-quality options, Filmic SMAA T2X settings, screen-space reflections, shadow filtering, and occlusion or screen-space lighting options. These controls affect different visual problems, so changing several together makes it harder to identify what helped.

World Depth of Field and Weapon Depth of Field are separate settings. This allows a sharper surrounding world without necessarily removing the weapon-focused effect. Weapon VFX masking dynamically reduces obstruction at the point of aim, helping preserve the target view while retaining effects elsewhere in the image.

HDR10+ support is described as coordinating the engine with the display's brightness settings to adjust contrast and lighting. Assess it on a compatible display; the existence of an HDR option does not establish that an unsupported screen can reproduce the same presentation.

Upscaling, frame generation, and ray tracing

Supported technologies include NVIDIA DLSS 4.5, AMD FSR Redstone, Intel XeSS 3, and Filmic SMAA T2X. Choose according to the options actually offered by the game and your hardware. A technology listed in the feature announcement is not a promise that every graphics card exposes every associated feature.

Ray tracing is supported in Campaign, Multiplayer, and DMZ. That confirms mode coverage, not a guaranteed frame rate with ray tracing enabled on minimum hardware. The separate ray-tracing specification is the useful reference when that presentation is your main objective.

Start with the automatically selected configuration, then change one major option at a time. Compare image stability, target clarity, and the benchmark result after the change. Keep an improvement only when it solves a problem you can observe on your system. There is no independently verified universal settings preset that can guarantee the same performance across different CPUs, GPUs, resolutions, and displays.

Use the built-in benchmark

The benchmark runs a simulated Multiplayer sequence and displays Average FPS, CPU and GPU information, ping, and input latency. It also provides an end-of-run breakdown across the sequence and individual zones, with setting suggestions for different situations.

  1. Finish the installation and required updates before measuring anything.
  2. Let the game establish its automatic hardware configuration.
  3. Run the benchmark without changing several graphics options at once.
  4. Review both the overall result and zone-by-zone breakdown.
  5. Apply a specific suggested change or test a single setting.
  6. Repeat the sequence to compare the effect of that change.

Use the result to characterize your PC, rather than treating the recommended specification as a personal benchmark score. A built-in simulated sequence is also not proof that every live Multiplayer match or DMZ situation will have identical performance. It provides a controlled starting point for decisions that would otherwise be based on guesswork.

Install through the launcher you own

For Battle.net, launch the app and sign in, select All Games, find Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, and select Install. Confirm that the account matches the purchase before troubleshooting an absent license.

For Steam, open the client, sign in, choose Library, find the Call of Duty entry, and select Install. The installation instructions use the shared Call of Duty library entry; searching only for a separately named executable may therefore be unhelpful.

For Xbox on PC, open the Xbox app, choose My Library, select Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, and choose Install. If the game is missing, clear the Installed filter under Play state so the library also shows owned games that are not currently installed.

Keep additional space available for updates and allow the launcher to complete required installation work. An owned library item, a downloaded preload, and an unlocked mode are different states. Identify which state is missing before reinstalling or purchasing a second copy.

Advanced Shader Delivery and launch preparation

Advanced Shader Delivery supplies precompiled shaders ahead of time on supported PC platforms. The PC guidance recommends installing the Xbox PC app if you want to use ASD, even when your game purchase is through another PC platform. Installing that app is specifically necessary for the described ASD benefit; it is not presented as a general requirement to purchase through Xbox.

Install current appropriate graphics drivers as part of preparation. The driver and ASD details are time-sensitive, so distinguish a driver that is available from an announced future release. Do not assume an unreleased ASD-compatible driver is already installed simply because a preload is complete.

PC preloading began October 15 at 9 AM PT. Qualifying digital preorders receive Campaign Early Access from October 16 and DMZ Early Access from October 20. Full PC release is described as October 23 at midnight local time. That PC wording should not be extended into a universal console unlock schedule.

The game also streamlines its boot flow: updates applied during boot are described as no longer requiring a restart, while an update that arrives during an active session can still require one between matches. If the launcher or game requests an update, complete it before interpreting a failed connection as a hardware problem.

Separate launch errors from performance problems

If the game cannot launch, check ownership, installed updates, supported Windows configuration, TPM 2.0, and Secure Boot before experimenting with graphics quality. If a mode is locked, check the applicable access date and preorder eligibility. A benchmark cannot fix an entitlement that has not unlocked.

If the game launches but runs poorly, return to its automatic configuration and inspect the benchmark breakdown. A graphics adjustment is useful only after the installation, security, and account requirements are satisfied. Keeping these checks in order avoids changing unrelated settings while the actual obstacle remains a missing prerequisite.
