The Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 campaign is a 16-mission single-player story built around two connected fronts: Private Park Hyun Jun fights through the North Korean invasion of South Korea, while Captain Price pursues a revenge-driven operation outside the system. Campaign Early Access began on October 16, 2026, for qualifying digital preorders, and the full game launches on October 23.
Expect a mixture of large conventional battles, close-quarters raids, vehicle sequences, stealth, melee encounters, and a more open mission called Stranded. The campaign moves between Korea, New York, Paris, and Mumbai, but those locations should not be treated as a complete mission order. This guide stays spoiler-light and does not reveal the ending or major character outcomes.

Modern Warfare 4 is the Infinity Ward-led 2026 game published by Activision. It is not Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare from 2007, Modern Warfare from 2019, Modern Warfare II from 2022, or Modern Warfare III from 2023. That distinction matters when looking for walkthroughs because older mission names and guides can appear in results for similar searches.
Campaign access and release conditions
As of October 20, 2026, the campaign is in its Early Access period. Access began on October 16 and continues until the full launch on October 23. The early period is tied to qualifying digital preorders, so owning an unrelated edition, having access to an older Call of Duty title, or subscribing to Game Pass does not establish access by itself.
Modern Warfare 4 requires a separate purchase at launch and is not scheduled to join Game Pass until Holiday 2027. If the campaign remains locked during Early Access, verify that the account launching the game owns an eligible digital preorder on the same platform. Also account for the official warning that outages, regional time differences, and platform changes can affect availability.
The October 23 release covers the complete game rather than a second campaign launch. Campaign Early Access, DMZ Early Access, and the general launch are separate milestones: campaign access started October 16, DMZ Early Access is dated October 20 for qualifying digital preorders, and the full release is October 23. Do not use an advertised DMZ time as a campaign unlock time.
PC players can use Battle.net, Steam, or Xbox on PC. The campaign also launches on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. It is a current-generation release, so a PlayStation 4 or Xbox One installation is not available.
Two storylines drive the campaign
The campaign begins from the perspective of soldiers caught at ground level as a regional crisis becomes a wider war. North Korea launches a full-scale invasion of South Korea, placing Private Park and his squad on collapsing front lines. Their operations include urban fighting, entrenched positions, counteroffensives, and amphibious assaults conducted alongside United States and Republic of Korea Marine forces.

Park is a young South Korean soldier facing live combat for the first time. His side of the campaign emphasizes the immediate pressure placed on a squad trying to survive, regroup, and reclaim occupied territory. The fighting is not confined to one type of battlefield: the available material shows damaged cities, fortified ground, beach assaults, an airfield defense, and operations that cross into hostile territory.
Captain Price supplies the second perspective. Task Force 141 has been disbanded, former allies are hunting him, and he is operating outside the system he once served. His search for revenge draws him toward a weapon capable of changing the balance of power. Price enters an uneasy alliance with Valeria Garza and carries out illicit operations that eventually collide with the forces behind the invasion.
The two threads also create different styles of mission. Park’s chapters lean toward large military engagements and squad-level survival. Price’s operations use more close-quarters combat, infiltration, pursuit, and improvised action. The campaign moves backward and forward around the invasion, so a change of location or playable character may also indicate a change in time.
The broader route includes trench warfare in Korea, close-range fighting in New York, high-speed action through Paris, and SAS night operations in Mumbai. These places establish the campaign’s international scale without revealing which precise mission number contains every event.
Mission design and gameplay variety
Modern Warfare 4 combines mostly directed campaign missions with a smaller number of sequences that give the player more freedom. The conventional chapters use the series’ familiar rhythm: follow the squad, secure a position, survive a counterattack, operate military equipment, and move into the next set piece. The available campaign material includes a beach landing, chopper-gunner action, night-vision combat, tank sections, stealth, underground fighting, and an airfield escape that allows dynamic character switching.

That variety changes what the player must prioritize. A wide battlefield rewards careful movement between cover and attention to threats at range. Tight interiors make armor, ammunition, corners, and close-range enemies more important. Stealth sections punish rushed movement, while vehicle and mounted-weapon sequences focus more on recognizing immediate targets than preserving a preferred infantry loadout.
The campaign is designed as a dedicated single-player sequence rather than a chain of reused competitive maps. Its large battles contain many moving units and scripted events, but the player still needs to manage ordinary combat resources. Even on regular difficulty, an unsupported run into open ground can deplete health quickly. Later encounters place more pressure on ammunition, armor plates, and safe firing positions.
Use cover as the default position
Move from one protected position to another instead of treating every encounter as a sprint. Mounting or peeking from solid cover gives you a safer angle while enemies are firing. Before crossing open ground, clear visible threats and watch whether squadmates are advancing, holding, or waiting for your action.
Large scenes can make distant movement look more urgent than it is. Follow the active objective and immediate squad behavior rather than chasing every background battle. If an advance repeatedly fails, the problem is often exposure, not a lack of aggression.
Preserve armor and ammunition for pressure points
Armor plates and ammunition become more important in the later missions. Refill when an encounter ends and the route gives you a safe pause. Avoid replacing a useful weapon merely because another one appears; consider whether the next space is open, confined, or likely to contain armored enemies.
Heavily armored shotgun users are especially dangerous inside tight underground areas. Create distance when the layout permits it, avoid remaining directly in front of their approach, and use available explosive firepower rather than trading close-range shots. Entering these encounters without spare armor makes a small positioning error much harder to recover from.
Treat stealth and melee as separate combat modes
Some stealth sections are less forgiving than the open battles. Slow down, confirm patrol movement, and avoid starting an engagement before you know where nearby enemies are positioned. A failed stealth attempt can turn a controlled room into a close-range fight with poor cover.
Melee encounters use counter-based actions and can feel less precise than gunfights. Watch the opponent and respond to the required prompt instead of repeatedly attacking. These sequences sometimes occur during important story moments, so deliberate timing is more reliable than trying to rush through them.
How the Stranded mission works
Stranded is the campaign’s clearest open-zone mission and a preview of ideas also used by the separate DMZ mode. You begin behind enemy lines with limited equipment and rebuild your arsenal by exploring a large snowy area. A basement hideout acts as a safe location where gathered materials can be used to craft equipment.

The mission has three main objectives that can be completed in any order. You can travel between the key locations and push the story forward, or spend more time searching outposts and mystery markers. Optional exploration can lead to exotic weapons, keypad puzzles, and other discoveries, so the fastest route is not the only useful route.
A reliable approach is:
- Inspect the nearby area before committing to a distant objective. Early supplies improve every later fight.
- Return useful materials to the basement hideout and craft equipment that fills gaps in the current loadout.
- Raid manageable outposts before attacking a heavily defended objective. The goal is to gain weapons and resources without exhausting what you already have.
- Complete the three principal objectives in the order that best fits your equipment and position.
- Use fast travel when you need to cross already explored ground rather than repeating unnecessary fights.
- Decide when to stop exploring. Optional discoveries can strengthen the loadout, but they are not all required to advance the campaign.
The main difference from a standard mission is that Stranded lets preparation shape the difficulty of later objectives. Going directly to the closest marker is faster, but searching and crafting can provide better tools. Players interested only in the core story can focus on the three required objectives; players who enjoy exploration can spend considerably longer clearing the snowy zone.
A practical campaign play order
You do not need a special build before starting the story, and progress is primarily controlled by completing the current mission objective. The useful preparation is about settings, difficulty, and understanding how the campaign changes pace.
- Confirm campaign ownership and installation before launch. During Early Access, verify the qualifying digital preorder on the active account.
- Choose a difficulty that leaves room to learn the movement, armor, and melee systems. The campaign still punishes careless exposure on regular difficulty.
- Follow the objective marker and squad instructions through the opening conventional missions. These chapters establish how the game signals advances, defensive holds, and equipment use.
- Adjust tactics when the perspective changes. Park’s larger battles and Price’s off-book missions do not always reward the same pace.
- Search combat spaces during safe moments for ammunition and armor, particularly before moving underground or breaching another room.
- Give Stranded a separate exploration plan. Either pursue its three objectives efficiently or deliberately clear optional locations; switching between those goals without deciding can add unnecessary backtracking.
- Continue beyond the apparent final operation and allow the campaign sequence to finish fully. Do not assume that a major battle or the start of credits means every playable event has concluded.
Spoiler-light expectations before starting
The campaign’s 16 missions cover both the Korean conflict and Price’s connected global operation. It uses time shifts to alternate between the invasion in the present and actions leading up to it. That structure can initially make the story feel divided, but the two threads are designed to converge.
The Korean chapters place more emphasis on squad relationships and the experience of soldiers caught inside the invasion. Price’s chapters focus on former allies, revenge, shadow operations, and the search for a dangerous weapon. Ghost, Valeria Garza, and the antagonist known as the Archer are part of the wider conflict, but their specific outcomes are best left to the campaign itself.
Players should expect more than uninterrupted corridor shooting. The campaign moves between large battles, stealth, chases, hand-to-hand encounters, vehicle action, and the open structure of Stranded. Keeping armor stocked, respecting cover, and changing tactics with the mission type will do more to prevent repeated deaths than relying on constant forward momentum.
