Modern Warfare 4 on Steam

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is available to pre-purchase on Steam for PC, with the full game scheduled to release on Friday, October 23, 2026. Campaign Early Access began October 16 and DMZ Early Access begins October 20 for qualifying digital preorders. Multiplayer does not have a separate confirmed early-access date, so plan around the October 23 full launch unless Steam displays a different mode-specific unlock time for your region.

Make sure you are viewing the 2026 game rather than Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, the separate 2007 release. The new game's Steam app ID is 4435490; the 2007 game uses app ID 7940. The similar names make checking the year and app identity important before buying a game, key, gift, or account listing.

A reliable current Steam price is not confirmed here. Use the price and currency shown at the final Steam checkout for your region rather than assuming that a console price or third-party offer applies to Steam.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 on Steam at a glance

The Steam version is one of three announced PC storefront options, alongside Battle.net and Xbox on PC. Buying on one storefront should not be treated as ownership on another. A Battle.net activation code, an Xbox/PC offer, or credentials for a separate Steam account does not add the game to your existing Steam library.

The official PC launch wording says the full game releases at midnight local time on October 23. Actual access can still be affected by regional timing, service outages, or a platform-side change. Steam's countdown and the play button in your own library are the safest indicators when launch approaches.

How to buy the correct Steam version

1. Confirm the title and year. The product should say Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 and refer to the 2026 game. Do not use artwork or a search result alone to distinguish it from Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007).
2. Check the Steam app identity. The expected app ID is 4435490. If an external listing leads to app 7940, it is selling the 2007 game instead.
3. Choose between Standard and Vault. Standard covers the full game and applicable digital preorder benefits. Vault adds operator packs, weapons, one BlackCell season, and a DMZ bonus.
4. Check for the loyalty discount before paying. Eligible returning Call of Duty owners may see a 10% Vault Edition preorder discount when using the same platform and account as a qualifying previous purchase. The offer is limited to Vault preorders and is scheduled to end October 23, 2026.
5. Verify the final region and currency. Steam prices can vary by country. A low external price may be for a different region, storefront, account, or delivery method.
6. Check the PC security requirements. TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot are required. Confirm that both are available and enabled before launching the game.
7. Leave enough SSD space. The launch requirement is 115 GB of available SSD storage, and mandatory updates may need additional temporary or permanent space.

If you already pre-purchased Standard on Steam, an upgrade to Vault is supported through Steam or the in-game store on the same platform. The stated upgrade cost is $30 US SRP or the regional equivalent. The 10% loyalty discount does not apply to this later upgrade, so compare the initial Vault checkout with the Standard-plus-upgrade route before purchasing.

Standard Edition and Vault Edition on Steam

The two editions share the same base game. The practical decision is whether you want only the game and preorder benefits or also want the Vault cosmetic, weapon, Battle Pass, and DMZ extras.

The Hostile Alliance Operator Pack includes Price, Valeria, Ghost, and Blix at launch. Price and Valeria have masked and unmasked variants. The Special Forces Operator Pack adds operators representing France, Germany, South Korea, and the United Kingdom, each with a local-language voice pack.

The Signature Weapon Collection contains five weapon-and-blueprint combinations: the Kastov 762 with Voltspine, ISO Nightshade with La Sombra Venenosa, Rezi 12 with Shattered Code, Oris 8.6 with Volt-Edge, and the Combat Knife with Sombra Besada. The ranged weapons include multiple attachments and an Apex Attachment, and the collection unlocks at launch for Vault owners.

The Signature Weapon Collection is a Vault Edition extra.

Vault also includes one season of BlackCell. For preorders and prepurchases, access begins at the start of Season 1. For purchases or upgrades made after launch, the BlackCell Battle Pass is granted at the start of the first new season after the transaction. The package includes the full Battle Pass, 20 tier skips, 1,100 COD Points, and BlackCell-specific content, but those benefits become accessible when the applicable in-game Battle Pass is available.

The DMZ Deployment Kit contains two Weapon Insurance Contracts, two Operator Rescue Beacons, two Fulton Drop Markers, two Medium Backpacks, and two 2-Plate Carriers. These items accompany the extra Active Duty slot; they do not require a separate Vault-only version of DMZ.

Pre-purchase access and reward timing

The dates attached to a Steam preorder do not unlock every part of the game at once. Use this sequence to understand what should be available and when:

• October 15: The announced PC preload began at 9 AM PT.
• October 16: Campaign Early Access began for qualifying digital preorders.
• October 20: DMZ Early Access begins for qualifying digital preorders. Regional timing, outages, and platform changes can affect the actual start.
• October 23: The full game launches, including the general Multiplayer release.

The early-access Open Beta was also advertised as a digital preorder benefit, but it was a limited-time event rather than permanent early access to Multiplayer. Do not interpret that benefit as permission to play regular Multiplayer before October 23.

The Hunter Killer Operator Skin is available immediately in Black Ops 7 and Warzone for eligible preorders and becomes available in Modern Warfare 4 at launch. Using the immediate unlock requires the relevant Black Ops 7 or Warzone installation on the chosen platform. The reward must be redeemed by October 23, 2027.

Hunter Killer is the named digital-preorder operator reward.

The Gilded Pearl promotion includes Moonlit Pearl and the challenge-based Gilded Ruin camo. Gilded Ruin requires 5,000 Skulls earned through the stated Black Ops 7 or Warzone challenge; the two camo rewards become available in Modern Warfare 4 at launch. A digital preorder should not be read as automatic completion of that challenge.

The Inner Circuit M4 Blueprint also unlocks in Modern Warfare 4 at launch. Steam uses its mil-spec appearance. The translucent OG Green treatment is specific to Xbox Series X|S viewers, while the build, attachments, and gameplay characteristics are identical.

The Steam variant has the same build and gameplay characteristics as the Xbox Series X|S visual variant.

Vault loyalty discount eligibility on Steam

The 10% loyalty discount applies only to the Vault Edition preorder. To qualify on Steam, you must have owned and played an eligible paid Call of Duty title on the same platform and account used for the Modern Warfare 4 preorder. Free-to-play and mobile titles do not qualify.

Eligible titles listed for the offer include:

The discount should appear in the digital storefront or in-game store before checkout. It cannot be applied retroactively to a Standard-to-Vault upgrade. If the reduced Vault price does not appear, first confirm that the qualifying game was owned and played on the same Steam account. Do not complete checkout on the assumption that support will add the discount afterward.

Preloading through Steam and Call of Duty HQ

Some Steam users report that the Modern Warfare 4 preload appears through Call of Duty HQ instead of as a completely separate standalone installation. Treat that as current client behavior rather than a permanent packaging promise, because the way content is grouped in Steam can change.

Use these checks when the expected preload is not obvious:

1. Search your Steam Library for both Modern Warfare 4 and Call of Duty.
2. Open the relevant library entry and look for a preload or install button.
3. Check the title's managed content if Steam presents individual content packs.
4. Restart Steam after confirming that the purchase is attached to the correct account.
5. Confirm that the target drive is an SSD with at least 115 GB free, plus extra room for updates.
6. Use Steam's displayed download size and selected content as the final guide rather than relying on an older storage estimate.

A preload only downloads encrypted or staged files; it does not override mode-specific access dates. Having the files installed on October 20 does not establish early Multiplayer access before the October 23 launch.

PC checks before launching the Steam version

Modern Warfare 4 is specified for Windows PCs and requires broadband internet and DirectX 12. The minimum operating system is the latest 64-bit version of Windows 10, while the recommended and ray-tracing configurations use the latest 64-bit Windows 11. No macOS, Linux, or Steam Deck support is established here.

Before downloading, verify these launch blockers:

• TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot: Both are required on PC, and additional security measures may be enforced.
• Processor support: Only supported Intel and AMD processors with AVX are listed.
• Storage: An SSD with 115 GB available is required at launch; updates can require more space.
• Graphics API: DirectX 12 is required.
• Intel Arc systems: Resizable Bar is required for Intel Arc graphics.
• Online account: An Activision account and acceptance of the software and services agreement are required.
• Phone verification: A mobile phone number linked to the Activision account may be required.

The 115 GB figure is the stated launch requirement, not a guarantee that the installed folder will always remain exactly that size. Campaign, Multiplayer, DMZ, language data, shaders, and later updates can change the space used after installation.

Steam keys, gifts, and account offers

External listings often group unlike products under the phrase “Steam key.” Check the delivery type before comparing prices.

A cheaper account offer is not equivalent to a Steam key. It can separate the game from your normal friends list, achievements, payment history, security settings, and other owned Call of Duty titles. It may also prevent the same-account loyalty condition from being satisfied. For a normal Steam purchase, the safest result is an entitlement attached directly to the Steam account you intend to use.

Final Steam purchase checklist

Before checkout or launch, confirm that the page shows the 2026 game and app ID 4435490, choose the edition based on content you will actually use, and verify any Vault loyalty discount before payment. Check TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, AVX support, DirectX 12, and available SSD space. After purchase, use the Steam client to confirm preload status and the regional unlock countdown.

Keep Campaign, DMZ, and Multiplayer access dates separate: October 16 for Campaign Early Access, October 20 for DMZ Early Access, and October 23 for the full launch. If the Steam client shows a later regional time or a service notice, follow the client status rather than forcing access based only on the calendar date.
