Modern Warfare 4 is not included with Game Pass at its October 23, 2026 launch. You need to buy the game separately to play at launch. Activision's October 15 announcement gives Holiday 2027 as the planned Game Pass window, without an exact day. This is the announced position checked on October 22, 2026. Official Game Pass announcement.
A Game Pass subscription can still be relevant to Xbox online multiplayer or cloud streaming. Those service requirements are separate from whether the subscription includes the MW4 base game.
What your subscription and purchase actually cover
| Your situation | MW4 requirement at launch |
|---|---|
| You subscribe to Game Pass and want the MW4 base game | Buy MW4 separately; launch catalog access is not included. |
| You own MW4 and want Xbox console online multiplayer | Xbox lists Game Pass Essential as the separate online-play requirement. |
| You want to stream MW4 through Xbox Cloud Gaming | Xbox lists Essential, Premium or Ultimate, and explicitly requires a game purchase. |
| You want to wait for MW4 to enter Game Pass | The announced window is Holiday 2027; no exact date is given in the announcement. |
The Xbox MW4 page is explicit about the cloud condition: buying the game is still required. A cloud-play option is therefore not evidence of launch-day catalog inclusion. Online services and features can vary by region.
Cloud streaming is a way to play a purchased MW4 copy; the game is not included with Game Pass at launch.
Buy the base game, not just an upgrade
For launch access, Xbox offers Standard Edition and Vault Edition. Both include Modern Warfare 4. Standard is sufficient if you want the base game; Vault adds premium content.
The separately sold Vault Edition Upgrade lists bonus content. It should not be mistaken for the full Vault Edition or a substitute for owning MW4. A Game Pass subscription plus the upgrade does not remove the launch requirement to purchase the base game.
Use the product's included-content list to confirm that the game itself is part of your purchase. Xbox distinguishes the base game, Vault Edition, and Vault Edition Upgrade in separate purchase options. For a full edition comparison, use the linked price guide below.
Early access comes from the qualifying digital purchase
Activision's announcement attaches Campaign and DMZ Early Access to digital preorders. It lists October 16 for Campaign and October 20 for DMZ, with play time subject to time-zone differences, availability changes, and outages. Those are purchase benefits; the same announcement says MW4 is excluded from Game Pass at launch.
If your objective is to play before the full release, check that you have bought a qualifying digital edition. Having an active Game Pass subscription alone is not the entitlement described in the official launch announcement.
Waiting until Holiday 2027
Holiday 2027 is a broad announced window, not a confirmed calendar date. The supplied announcement does not specify an exact unlock day or a complete future tier-by-tier entitlement list. Check the catalog terms again when that window approaches rather than treating a speculative date as a purchase guarantee.
Activision also says Game Pass Ultimate subscribers retain access to older Call of Duty titles, naming Black Ops 7, Black Ops 6, and Modern Warfare III. Their inclusion does not extend to MW4 at launch. Always check the exact game title when a store or app displays several Call of Duty releases together.
